The Morphology of Low Surface Brightness Disk Galaxies

چکیده
We present UBV I and Hα images of a sample of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) disk galaxies. These galaxies are generally late types, if they can be sensibly classified at all. However, they are not dwarfs, being intrinsically large and luminous. The morphology of LSB galaxies is discussed in terms of the physical interpretation of the Hubble sequence. Galaxies with high contrast relative to the sky background are subject to being more finely typed than those which appear merely as fuzzy blobs on photographic plates. This causes the stages of the Hubble sequence to be nonlinear in the sense that large morphological type distinctions are made between high surface brightness spirals when only small physical differences exist, and small morphological distinctions are made between low surface brightness galaxies even when large physical differences exist. Many LSB galaxies lack the old red disk conspicuous in higher surface brightness spirals. Their morphology is strikingly similar in all bands from U to I, suggesting farily homogeneous stellar populations lacking a well developed giant branch. These properties, together with their very blue colors, suggest that LSB galaxies are relatively younger than their high surface brightness counterparts. A few of these LSB galaxies appear to be very young ( < ∼ 1 Gyr), and as such may represent local examples of protogalaxies.

A MORPHOLOGICAL-TYPE DEPENDENCE IN THE μ0–log h PLANE OF SPIRAL GALAXY DISKS
We present observational evidence for a galaxy ‘Type’ dependence to the location of a spiral galaxy’s disk parameters in the μ0–log h plane. With a sample of ∼40 Low Surface Brightness galaxies (both bulgeand disk-dominated) and ∼80 High Surface Brightness galaxies, the early-type disk galaxies (≤Sc) tend to define a bright envelope in the μ0–logh plane, while the late-type (≥Scd) spiral galaxi...

The severity of the mass discrepancy in spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with the central surface brightness of the disk. Progressively lower surface brightness galaxies have ever larger mass discrepancies. No other parameter (luminosity, size, velocity, morphology) is so well correlated with the magnitude of the mass deficit. The rotation curves of low surface brightness disks thus provi...
متن کاملStar Formation in Galaxies with Large Lower Surface Brightness Disks
We present B, R, and Hα imaging data of 19 large disk galaxies whose properties are intermediate between classical low surface brightness galaxies and ordinary high surface brightness galaxies. We use data taken from the Lowell 1.8m Perkins telescope to determine the galaxies’ overall morphology, color, and star formation properties. Morphologically, the galaxies range from Sb through Irr and i...

We presentUBV I surface photometry of a sample of low surface brightness (LSB) disk galaxies. LSB disk galaxies are fairly well described as exponential disks with no preferred value for either scale length, central surface brightness, or rotational velocity. Indeed, the distribution of scale lengths is indistinguishable from that of high surface brightness spirals, indicating that dynamically ...
متن کاملThe Formation of Disk Galaxies
We present a scenario for the formation of disks which explains not only the properties of normal galaxies, but the properties of the population of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBs) as well. We use a gravitationally self-consistent model for disk collapse to calculate the observable properties of disk galaxies as a function of mass and angular momentum of the initial protogalaxy. The model...
